Floriography – The Year of Flowers
Did you know that the language of flowers is called Floriography? And that each and every flower holds a special meaning? Even the colours are symbolic! As much as I have always loved flowers, and understood there were sentiments behind certain things… I didn’t realise just how much detail there was to these floral traditions!
Long before emails and text messages – flowers were sent with deeply emotive reasons – particularly in the 18th and 19th century, flowers were sent with a hidden depth of sentiment. And also, did you know that each month has a different ‘birth’ flower?
Last year, a dear friend – Kirsty from ‘Pom Plus Pom‘, coined me ‘Queen of Flowers’ – she even made me a flower crown! It is a title I am more than happy to take. And actually, whether I am drawing them, sewing them, using floral fabrics, making paper flowers, arranging them, using faux ones for a wreath – I am almost always happy getting creative amongst blooms! Anyway – I think this year we should celebrate flowers in all their stunning forms. Wild, British, Tropical… but also, at the start of each month, over on social media, I will post about that month’s birth flowers, their history and symbols – and I will try and get creative with them. You can too if you like! I will of course be doing other flowers and makes but, this month’s ones will obviously be special! #theyearofflowers
The other night, I couldn’t sleep. Who knows why – but a proper bought of insomnia. My mind was racing – full of flowery ideas. I wanted to know more and more about blooms, petals. The why’s, the hidden meanings, the history of flowers. I have tried to find a course on Floriography – I quite fancied being a ‘floriographer’! Should such a thing exist?! However, I can only see floristry or horticulture – do you know of any flower history courses? Maybe I might buy lots of lovely books on the subject, make Google and Wikipedia my friend!
What is your favourite flower? Do you know your birth flower?
