This week is World Autism Awareness Week, and in particular this Good Friday 2nd April… it is World Autism Awareness Day! However, as it is a bank holiday, Freddie’s nursery are marking it a day early, tomorrow on the 1st – with activities and reading and dressing in a ‘spectrum of colours’ to encourage all diversity and inclusion. He is SO excited about it. The first words out of his mouth this morning, before he had even got out of bed was ‘Mummy! It is World Autism Day tomorrow!’ This, amazes me. That he knows this, remembers this, is excited. I asked him if he knows what it means and he said ‘it is just a good thing’. ❤
Yes, it is! It makes you, YOU! Obviously, in time he will learn lots more about it – the ups (mainly!), some downs – but we talk about it regularly and help him (or try?) to understand. It is a diagnosis but it isn’t a bad thing, it is just a thing!
Obviously, if there is a ‘rainbow’ themed day at nursery, my goodness I wanted Freddie in particular, but him and Rupert to be super duper… let’s do ALL the colour. So we have designed our own t-shirt using my Cricut Maker*!
These are plain blank tops from Next and uses mainly the Cricut neon vinyl range. I bought a rainbow image from Etsy and then just played around in Design Space adding tweaks of shapes and replacing some of the arcs, and of course adding in the font too. I love that quote, it feels right and true.
So, go on Freddie, and Rupert, and everyone in fact! – be your own rainbow.
