Top 5… Halloween Pumpkin Ideas!

Every Halloween as a child – we used to always do the traditional pumpkin carving. We used to have pumpkin soup, sometimes trick or treating, and sometimes even apple bobbing! Did anyone else used to do this??

We did however with the pumpkin carving – used to stick to the jagged mouth/diamond eyes, triangle nose type design (not very different/forward thinking!) However – check out some of the links below to inspire a new way of using pumpkins this Halloween…! It has made me want to go out and buy lots of squashes to get creating!

1. Painted Pumpkins

I had never thought of painting a pumpkin – but why not! And when they are as beautiful as these from Sincerely Sara D… Just love her selection of ideas! 🙂

2. Lace carved pumpkins

This would take a LONG time – but, totally worth the effort! Beautiful delicate lace patterned pumpkin carving.

3. Lots and lots of pumpkins!

These don’t look difficult to carve – but in the collective they look amazing together! This would be fab at an Autumnal wedding or party!

4. Colourful wax crayon pumpkins

Wow! Bright and colourful – this wax crayon coated pumpkin! Certainly a different way of decorating 🙂

5. Don’t waste those pumpkin seeds!

Finally, nothing to do with design – one thing I didn’t realise until a couple of years ago – you can eat the seeds inside… now don’t get me wrong, I had of course heard of/eaten/used pumpkin seeds – very regularly! – but as these are white, and covered in the gloopy pumpkin goo – I naively and stupidly – thought perhaps they were different?? Anyway – this link is how to get a ‘perfect pumpkin seeds’ snack. Delicious and nutritious!

Enjoy!

The Crafty Lass does… TV!

Wow.

That’s all this post needs. If you had asked me 1 month ago a) would I work for a shopping channel on Sky in the buying team and b) would I do the on air demos?? I would have laughed in your face.

In fact, what I will do instead is tell you to tune in to Sky 660 at various times across this weekend for The Craft Channel’s ‘Festive Weekend Wonder’ with The Crafty Lass. Crazy right…??

Once again, I apologise for the lack of recent blog posts – but in reality I basically have enough time at the minute to make sure I am eating, sleeping (albeit less!), commute to London to The Craft Channel, try and stay in touch with loved ones, and of course some crafting… And the odd bit of gym/socialising/nails being done for the camera (!). The point I am trying to make is my schedule has become ‘complicated’. Ha!

I have always been crafty (as we know on this blog – the clue is in the name!!) and I have in the past been into theatre – a regular in the local am dram scene where I grew up in Sunbury-on-Thames at Riverside Arts Centre – however, I am not sure I was prepared for TV! Well, perhaps prepared is the wrong word – expecting?? – basically, it felt natural, but I do also feel – how did this happen??

For those of you who don’t know this story – I basically sent ONE tweet to The Craft Channel simply saying:

The Crafty Lass ‏@craftylassdoes Sep 7

@craftchannelTV how do you get to be on The Craft Channel?? Only (part) joking. What sort of programmes will you show? x

Before I knew it, the following week – I was in The Craft Channel offices having a meeting with Head of Buying – quickly on the same day (about 20 minutes after arriving!) had a screen test – then the following week a follow up meeting – during which, I was offered a job in the buying team… and the rest is history. I now work for them 3 days a week, with the balance The Crafty Lass time…So what started as a quick almost throwaway tweet as now landed me a dream job! If you don’t ask you don’t get…

So, if you are interested in craft, and you are interested in me, and you are interested in TV… check out The Craft Channel and this weekend’s Festive Weekend Wonder featuring a 1 hour show with The Crafty Lass! There are plenty of opportunities to see across this weekend (and order the beautiful laser cut greeting card designs with embellishment gems!)

It’s the start of things to come….

The Crafty Lass does… Nautical Cake Topper!

Inspired by my recent blog post on the birthday cake topper I made for my dad’s birthday – someone saw this and asked me to make another nautical themed version!

Their daughter Nadine is apparently mad on boats and sailing… So, this is just what she got! 🙂 All handcrafted out of paper and card – a yacht, with personalised ‘Nadine’ bunting, a little anchor, the ‘ferocious’ sea – and a little seagull keeping watch at the top too!

If you’d like a personal, handmade, different cake topper – then please get in touch! 🙂

Top 5… Autumn Crafts!

Wow, what a week! The Crafty Lass is busy, busy, busy… you might have guessed by the very severe lack of blog posts over the last few weeks! Sometimes I wish there was two of me – not sure my husband would like twice the nagging, but I would certainly get a lot more done (both chores and crafts!!!)

For those of you who don’t know – I actually started a new job this week in addition to The Crafty Lass. I joined The Craft Channel buying team (very exciting) and potential for ‘on air’ demonstrations (VERY exciting!)

Anyway – just want to put this out there: I LOVE AUTUMN. I think it may actually be my favourite season. The cold nights drawing in – suddenly allowed to have multiple accessories – the woolly hats, my beloved mittens that come out year after year, boots, patterned tights, I do own about 100 scarfs (no joke)… Anyway enough about my wardrobe. It’s not just an egotistical fashion drive – it’s the glorious colours in nature, the warming winter food, large glasses of red wine and cups of hot chocolate – the knowledge that it will soon be Halloween, bonfire night and then CHRISTMAS.

My new (did I mention exciting?) role, does however have one down side… a drive to London. However, I have decided that actually, it is only a ‘downside’ if you think of it that way. I can chat to friends and family (handsfree of course), listen to audio books, and look at the wonderful scenery! As much as yes – it is long – and something that for me, will certainly take some time to get used to – it has certainly made me think – wow, our countryside is BEAUTIFUL. I am fortunate that the majority of the commute is straight down the M40 – with lovely rolling green hills, villages and towns passing me by as I whizz down the motorway in my little (“SMARTy Pants”) Smart car – otherwise knows as my Pocket Rocket… “ROCKY”!

The sky this week, can only be described as EPIC. Not sure if the ‘blood moon’ has had anything to do with it – but the sun has somehow been ‘yellower’, the clouds vibrant in brushstrokes of oranges and reds across the sky. Combined with low lying mist, and the fact I have been seeing both sunrise, and sunset on the motorway – the days are certainly getting shorter…it made me think AUTUMN IS ON IT’S WAY!

Anyway, enough about me, my new love for driving to London and Autumn – here are my Top 5… Autumn Crafts!

1. Leaf Placecards

Wow – just how stunningly effective are these! Leaf ‘placecards’ – gold ‘dipped’ and covered in beautiful calligraphy… It sounds time consuming, but worth the extra effort! You’ll not see your Autumnal walk in the park in the same way again…!

2. Glitter Leaves

Sticking to the ‘leaf’ theme – you can’t go wrong with a bit of glitter… ALOT of glitter. Such an effective garland! The guide advises to use artificial leaves – however, I am sure you could use ‘real’ ones, if you allow them to be pressed/dried out beforehand.

3. Pine Cone Garland

This is so beautiful – it would look fantastic at Christmas on your tree, or hanging on the mantelpiece. I already have a small hoard of pinecones from last Autumn in the loft… (you never know when they will come in handy!!) So this is certainly a craft that I will be trying!

4. Stick Crown

A craft for your little ones here – they’ll have so much fun making this crown with you! You can go on a lovely woodland walk, collect twigs and et voila a new fancy dress accessory!

5. Ombre Pinecones

What a fun craft! You have to agree – they look pretty beautiful painted! This would be lovely coordinated with another place setting idea here – where you simply saw them almost in half and add in your name card. Almost makes we wish we’d got married in Autumn and not Spring!

Have fun!
